Justus Zahn  with his wife and daughter

Historical Note

Justus Zahn, 1847-1918, a native of Marburg, Germany, came to the United States at the age of twenty-two. His parents were Franz and Caroline Zahn and his father was, for many years, a judge of the Supreme Court at Cassell.

Zahn returned to Germany to serve in the army during the Franco-Prussian War. After ward, he returned to the United States where he set up a photography studio in Chicago, IL. Later, he relocated to St. Louis, then Belleville, IL, where he married Elise Kreppelt in 1882. Soon there after the family came to Galveston where they lived for fourteen years. Zahn enjoyed a flourishing business duirng this period and became well-known as a society photographer. He also enjoyed a wide circle of friends in the city. Choosing not to remain in Galveston after the hurricane of 1900, Zahn moved his family to St. Louis, then to Bowling Green, MO in 1909, where he lived the remainder of his life.

Holdings include correspondence, deeds, marriage certificates receipts, a will and photographs.
