GRADE RAISING - RESIDENTIAL VIEWS

The grade raising affected 2,156 houses. Larger houses were raised and new foundations built beneath them before they were filled, whereas smaller structures were raised on stilts. Temporary walkways enabled residents to go across ground that awaited fill. Some houses, such as the James Moreau Brown residence (Ashton Villa), at the northeast corner of 24th Street and Avenue J, were buried in place. The piping in of fill, which contained salt water, destroyed most vegetation, resulting in the replanting of trees and bushes.
